About

Heidi Melo cares deeply about the intersection of creativity and the Christian faith, and loves to learn from God and those around her through the relational practice of art-making. She loves telling stories about the little joys, humors, wonders, and bewilderments dispersed throughout "ordinary" life. Having grown up for a majority of her life in Bratislava, Slovakia and coming from an American-Latvian-Brazilian family, nowadays you can find her scribbling things, places, people, and ideas to life in Wisconsin, near the Twin Cities. If you find her, she’ll also probably have a mug of tea, and maybe one to share with you.

She received her BA in Community Art from Wheaton College in December 2022. She recently completed an education internship with the Minnesota Center for Book Arts.

Artist Statement

I am a lover and explorer most often of mixed media, collage, murals, books, music, graphic design, illustration, and placemaking. My work primarily utilizes whatever is available; whatever I find in my home that appeals to me in texture and mood. I enjoy approaching the familiar with new curiosity.
In my visual work, I am primarily inspired by the post-impressionists, like Van Gogh, and Christian iconography. In my storytelling, I take cues from illustrators such as Patricia Polacco and the books of my childhood, especially allegory and magical realism, such as C.S. Lewis’ Narnia series. In my poetry, I'm drawn to spoken word artists like Sarah Kaye and Jackie Hill Perry. I create as a means for building memorials of people's experiences and stories. I am an art-finder. The beauty and the truth hidden within confusion and grief is what I hope to actively seek as I create and share.
Overall, I seek to visualize mood and tone, through remembrance and the telling of stories. In illustration and writing, I often visualize the internal happenings of a figure or character with external imagery and symbols—the central figures in my work get surrounded by something much bigger going on inside them.
My hope is that through the environments I create/illustrate/highlight and by making words tactile, I can practice and help others practice understanding their stories in a new way.
